✦ So Witches We Became

Synopsis

So We Became Witches is a young adult fantasy that follows a teenage girl whose life is upended when she discovers a connection to an ancient legacy of witches and the dangerous magic that comes with it. As she navigates friendships, family expectations, and growing supernatural abilities, she becomes entangled in a conflict that threatens both her community and the people she loves. Blending coming-of-age themes with contemporary fantasy, the novel explores identity, power, loyalty, and the choices that shape who we become.

  • The shadow creature/paralysis demon reminds me of the show SIN on Hulu.

“And if nothing breaks and you just need an excuse…” The dimple in her left cheek reappears. “Go ahead and break something, Nell.”

  • I feel like the 'shadow' and the way the main character relates everything negative to it, really portrays the way people who suffer with anxiety feel. As someone who has anxiety and Childhood PTSD I can relate to a lot of things the FMC is feeling/mentally going through.

Here amid the shadows
Here amid the gloom
Here amid the echoes
Of this lonely room
Together in our solitude
You’ll come to recognize
You’re mine
I know you’ve other things to do
Another life to live
Your heart does not belong to you
It isn’t yours to give
Tomorrow you’ll be far away
But first I’ll claim my prize
You’re mine
I like to dream it’s otherwise
Pretend the world is fine
I know you’ll soon be on your way
But here in the shadows
You’re mine
This night can’t last forever
Too soon we’ll see the dawn
Too soon the sun will rise again
Too soon you will be gone
But as long as we are covered
By dark and starry skies
You’re mine
Here in the shadows
You’re mine

Review

What do I say about this book? Once again, Jill's writing captivates you, lures you in, and nothing is what it seems. There is always a story beneath the main story, that is slowly revealed. A deeper meaning that pulls at your heartstrings, or brings some sort of insight. I love that she isn't afraid to touch on darker themes, but also shows you can overcome them. I also like that the way the character's overcome situations, isn't how you would think. She always adds a touch of magic, but just enough to make you question 'maybe magic is real.' It's not too much, its just enough.
If you have never read any of her books, please do! They are worth your time, and have such good meaning/story within them. I will warn though, this book does touch on dark themes related to non-consent, and rape. So, if that is a trigger for you, then best leave it on the shelves.
